Frequently asked questions

Selling a debt means assigning the right to collect that debt to a third party through a sale agreement (assignment of debt). The original creditor stops owning the receivable in exchange for an amount lower than the original debt, obtaining immediate liquidity.

Yes, it is perfectly legal. The assignment of debts is recognised under English law (section 136 of the Law of Property Act 1925 for legal assignments). The debtor must be notified in writing of the assignment, and the terms of the debt cannot get worse for the debtor.

You need to be the legitimate owner of the receivable and hold documents that prove it: invoices, contracts, delivery notes, county court judgments (CCJs), etc. You do not upload any documents when publishing: they are only requested when an investor asks for more information.

No. You can sell debts whether or not court proceedings have been issued. In fact, you can do both things at once: put the debt up for sale while pursuing it through the courts.

Listing costs a one-off payment of ยฃ19.90 for a single debt and ยฃ69.90 for a portfolio or package of debts. Debtalia charges no commission or fees whatsoever on the sale itself.

Typically law firms, debt purchasing companies and private investors, who have their own resources to carry out collection and recovery actions both amicably and through the courts.

When an investor is interested in your debt, they send an enquiry or offer through your debt listing. You receive it directly in your email and can negotiate with them directly and confidentially.

We recommend a minimum discount of 20% on the face value of the debt so that it attracts interest from investors. The price can be marked as negotiable.
